The fluoride question comes back onto the front burner at regional headquarters today and opponents of adding fluoride to the water are already taking issue with the question being asked.
Regional staff is proposing a question that could read “Should the Region of Waterloo continue to fluoridate your municipal water?” But opponents argue that question is biased and should really ask if residents want the region to continue adding hydrofluorsilicic acid to the water. The critics of community water fluoridation claim the additive is an inorganic product that contains arsenic, mercury and lead.
A regional committee will consider the question today and, if approved, it will come back to a public meeting March 9 for feedback. This fall’s vote will be the fourth on the fluoridation of Waterloo’s water since the practice began back in 1967.
