Premier’s approach to amalgamation

Premier Dalton McGuinty says there needs to be a consensus before the province will even consider an amalgamation between Kitchener and Waterloo.

The Premier made the comment during a visit to Kitchener, and the 570 News studios on Tuesday.

He says the cities will have to come to some agreement before the province will look at the issue.

He adds that this isn’t the first time amalgamation has come up.

He says he was approached with the amalgamation issue seven or eight years ago.

McGuinty says until there is an agreement, he will focus on the other issues that affect the community like health care, schools, and jobs.

The City of Kitchener had voted in favour of asking residents whether they want to discuss an amalgamation.

The City of Waterloo voted against the idea.
