Technology conference attracts big names in Waterloo

Waterloo is home to EpCon 2010 today. It’s a technology conference that’s taking place at the Waterloo Inn comprised of some of the biggest names in the biz. Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Apple and RIM and several other tech top dogs will all be represented.
The conference is being put on by EPIC, a student organization to Educate, Promote, Inspire and Connect with/to technology. The forum helps students get in touch with technology outside of the classroom.
Rahul Bhardwaj is a representative with EPIC. He tells 570 News the speakers at today’s conference will be talking to a crowd of students who are in technical programs and have a deep interest in the future of technology. The idea is that students don’t get this kind of interactivity while in school. They are busy attending class and working on theoretical propositions.
At the two day conference, students have the opportunity to discuss technology with members of the industry and hear how they are innovating for the future.
Around 300 people will be at the conference. 250 delegates are expected, and the rest are speakers, teams and exhibitors.
Some of the speakers include: Mike Lee, Chief Strategy Officer for Rogers Communications Inc.; Steven Woods, Director of Google Waterloo; and Neil Bunn, Technology Architect at IBM. Their topics will include cloud computing, mobile development, gaming, social media and nanotechnology.
EpCon will also feature the “Elympics”. Delegates will compete in games like WikiTag and “spd txtng” to challenge their inner techie.
The conference gets underway at 10:00 a.m.
