MTO wants input into 7/8 expansion

The Minister of Transportation is asking for more public input as they plan an expansion of Highway 7/8 through Shakespeare.

MTO spokesperson Bob Nichols says the original plan is still on the table, but they’re also considering alternates, including bypassing the Hamlet to the north or south.

Residents have rallied to have the proposed route changed, suggesting it would destroy the charm and character of the area.

Nichols says they hope to find a solution that addresses both the future traffic needs and the residents’ concerns. The traffic is expected to double in the next 30 years, to 24-thousand vehicles per day.

Nichols says another public workshop will be held around the end of March.
