Tabbara makes court appearance, as deadline passes for election registration

By Mark Pare

It looks as if there will be a new MP representing Kitchener South-Hespeler in a couple weeks.

Elections Canada released its list of registered candidates for the federal election, after the deadline to register passed on Monday.

Eight candidates are listed for the riding, but Marwan Tabbara, who has represented Kitchener South-Hespeler since 2015, was not listed.

Tabbara did not publicly announce his intentions for the upcoming election.

Tabbara has been sitting as an Independent since June 2020, when he stepped down from the Liberal caucus after news of his April 2020 arrest in Guelph was made public.

He is facing two counts of assault, one of break and enter to commit an indictable offense and one count of criminal harassment.

Tabbara made a court appearance on Wednesday.

The Record reports the case has been adjourned until September 23.
