SIU says Regional police not responsible for woman’s injury

By Blair Adams

The province's Special Investigations Unit has cleared Waterloo Regional Police in an incident from last June.

A 21-year-old woman fractured one her legs when she tried to evade officers by jumping into a utility trailer being towed by a vehicle.

It happened in the area of Weber Street East and Fergus Avenue the afternoon of June 5, 2018.

At the time, police were attempting to arrest a suspect in connection with a stolen vehicle investigation and two officers had been chasing the woman on foot.

The Interim Director of the Special Investigations Unit determined there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against either officer.

Five investigators, two forensic investigators, and one collision re-constructionist were assigned to the investigation.
