SIU clears Regional police after man injured in cell

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

The province's Special Investigations Unit has cleared Waterloo Regional Police in a case from earlier this month.

On June 5, a man being lodged in a cell at the police station in Kitchener, suffered a serious injury.

He punched the Plexiglas door with his right hand several times and was later taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with a broken pinky finger.

The SIU determined through reviewing a video recording, the man's injury was self-inflicted and he alone is to blame for it.

The Interim Director of the SIU said the video showed the man punching the cell door upwards of 60 times within a span of about five minutes.
