Some alarming numbers from Waterloo Regional Police from their recent blitz during Canada Road Safety Week.

Police say during the campaign, which ran from May 14 to May 20, they laid a total of 770 road safety charges.

Officers focused on behaviours that put drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other road users at risk.

That included impaired driving, as well as aggressive and distracted driving.

Here's a breakdown of the charges:

  • Impaired related charges: 43
  • Aggressive driving charges: 351
  • Distracted driving charges (handheld device): 52
  • Seatbelt charges: 22
  • other traffic charges: 302

Waterloo Regional Police Chief Bryan Larkin said the number of charges laid in one week is concerning.

“Road safety is a key priority for our Service and we want to remind motorists that road safety is everyone's responsibility. We will continue to enforce these initiatives to ensure our roads are safe for all. We encourage all motorists to be safe, be smart, and be responsible.” Larkin said in a release.

During the campaign in 2018, the regional force laid close 800 charges.
