Police to speak on ‘ongoing police investigations’

By Mark Pare

Regional Police will host media Friday morning to speak about “ongoing police investigations in Waterloo Region.”

It's being called a roundtable discussion, and comes after a string of incidents over the last couple weeks, including several incidents involving gun violence.

Nine days ago, Helen Schaller, 58, was gunned down in the King and Westminster area of Downtown Preston.

A statement was released to 570 NEWS this week on behalf of the family.

Among other things, the statement calls for people to “use your words to make sure that our police force has the tools and manpower they need to get these dangerous criminals off our streets.”

Police are still searching for a suspect, and have released photos of a red Honda Fit that was seen leaving the area of King and Westminster at the time of the shooting, headed towards Guelph.

Meantime, a pair of Easter weekend incidents involving gunshots in the university district of Waterloo was cause for concern.

The first of those happened last Friday morning at a plaza at King and University, in what's believed to be a targeted incident.

A Greater Toronto Area man suffered non-life threatening injuries, while gunshots down the street just over 24 hours later has led to an SIU investigation.

That's because when police were responding to the incident early Saturday morning, two men were struck by a responding police cruiser in the middle of King Street, leaving one of the men with serious injuries.

Police have not indicated which incidents they will speak to.

It all gets underway at 9:00 a.m.
