One injured in Cambridge house fire

As people were getting ready for Halloween, fire crews were busy putting out a house fire on Schlueter Street in Cambridge.

The Cambridge Fire Department was called to the Preston townhouse complex just before 4 p.m. on October 31.

Neighbours say the fire was raging for over 20 minutes before fire crews were on scene.

“I was just sitting upstairs with my headphones on and didn’t notice it until we smelt the smoke,” said neighbour Dan West.

The fire started in the kitchen and worked its way upstairs, according to CFD. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Andy Pownall CFD captain said the homeowner was taken to hospital due to mild smoke inhalation.

“One of the neighbours here pulled him out of the house,” said West. “It was pretty scary, but we're happy everyone is going to be okay.”

Windows of the townhouse were blown out, but the fire was completely contained to the single unit. Damages are estimated to be around $250,000, but could increase once insurance goes in.

“Thank God for the firefighters, they really saved the day,” said West.
