No charges against WRPS officer after man with knife shot in Kitchener

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

After a nearly year-long investigation, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has found no reasonable grounds to believe that a WRPS officer committed a criminal offence in connection with shooting a 19-year-old man in August of last year.

On Aug. 18, 2021, a man armed with a knife came towards the officer in a parking lot on Ottawa Street South in Kitchener. When he ignored the officer's commands to stop, the officer fired once, striking him. The man collapsed, but got back up and charged towards the officer, who then fired another single shot, followed by seven rounds.

The officer then tried to get away, dropping his firearm in the process. The man picked it up, but after an altercation, the officer was able to disarm him.

The 19-year-old suffered gunshot wounds to the left arm, and left and right legs, and was taken to hospital in police custody.

The director of the SIU, Joseph Martino, found no reasonable grounds to believe the officer acted unlawfully during this incident, and the file has been closed.
