Cyclist suffers serious injuries in Kitchener crash (update)

By Blair Adams

A Kitchener man has suffered serious injuries following a crash on Victoria Street, near Strange Street on Monday morning.

The 22-year-old, who police say was not wearing a helmet, was transported to Grand River Hospital and was later airlifted to a hospital in Hamilton.

Waterloo Regional Police say the man, who was travelling across Victoria from the Iron Horse Trail on his bike, was allegedly struck by an SUV heading eastbound.

The driver of the SUV was not hurt.

Sergeant Jeff Cooper with the traffic unit said a second vehicle at the scene was not involved in the collision.

Cooper also told 570 NEWS it's way too soon to say if there will be charges, as it's early on in the investigation.

The crash happened just before 10:30 a.m.

Victoria has since reopened to traffic, but was closed for around five hours while police conducted their investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to call police at 519-570-9777 ext. 8791.

***Clarification: Police originally said the victim was 25. He is 22-years-old***
