By CityNews Kitchener Staff

The SIU is investigating after an officer discharged their firearm during a call for service in Cambridge earlier today.

Around 12:25 p.m., police responded to an incident at a residence in the area of Ironwood Drive and Sandalwood Drive. The SIU has since clarified that the initial call was “related to a wellness check.”

In a media release, the police watchdog has indicated there was an interaction between police officers and the man, resulting in one officer discharging his firearm at the man.

The 22-year-old man was reportedly taken to hospital via ambulance, where he remains with serious injuries.

There is still a heavy police presence in the area and police ask that you avoid it – noting there is no concern for public safety.

As required by law, no further information can be provided by the Waterloo Regional Police Service at this time.

Any further inquiries may be directed to SIU Communications. The SIU has also urged anyone who may have information regarding their investigation, including videos or photos, to contact their lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or through their website
