Early Friday evening, Waterloo Regional Police provided an update to a suspicious death investigation involving an eight-year-old boy in Cambridge last weekend.
Police say early Friday morning, a deceased male was located in a bush area on a rural property in Milton by Halton Regional Police.
Through investigation, police suspect the man is Curtis Hesselink, pending confirmation following a post-mortem examination.
Police also say the death is not considered suspicious.
Investigators have also now confirmed Hesselink is the father of the child.
On Monday, police identified Hesselink as a person who may have information that could assist investigators.
Constable Andre Johnson says it's a tragedy whenever there's a death involving a young child.
“Especially in this circumstance where we do consider the death to be suspicious. So we are appealing to the community [for] anyone with information to come forward to police or Crime Stoppers.”
Police are awaiting toxicology results in regards to the child’s death. A cause of death was not determined through the post-mortem.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call police at 519-570-9777 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Anonymous tips can also be submitted at www.waterloocrimestoppers.
When asked if police suspect the child ingested drugs, Johnson says it would be premature to speculate at this point. “We are hoping that the toxicology will shed some light on the circumstances surrounding the death, but that will be part of the ongoing investigation.”
