2020 “Lulu Series: Art in the City” speakers announced

This year’s Lulu Series: Art in the City speakers have been announced. Barbara Cole, Joseph Fry, and Rebecca Belmore will speak at the three events.

Started in 2003, the annual series explores the relationship between art and urban environments. 

Each year, speakers delve into this relationship. Past speakers have included artists, architects, urban planners and other cultural leaders.

This year’s series kicks off with Blue Cabin Committee member Barbara Cole. On March 19, Cole will share the history of the Blue Cabin, originally a home for Maritime labourers. 

The Blue Cabin was later restored and became a floating artist residency in False Creek’s Plaza of Nations. Before the talk, members of the Canadian YC Chinese Orchestra will give a short performance.

The second talk will take place on April 16, given by landscape architect Joseph Fry. Fry’s studio, Hapa Collaborative, has worked on projects like the Steveston Nikkei Memorial, the Canadian Navy Monument in Ottawa, and Yi Fao Park in New Westminster.

After a brief performance by Jodo Shin Taiko, Fry will shed light on public art and memorialization in the age of reconciliation.

Multidisciplinary artist Rebecca Belmore will give the third and final talk on May 7, preceded by a short performance by Theresa “Keliya” Warbus.

A member of the Lac Seul (Anishinaabe) First Nation, Belmore’s work connects bodies, land and language to cement on the political and social realities of Indigenous communities.

All talks take place at City Hall, 6911 No. 3 Rd., at 7 p.m. They are free to attend, but have limited seating, so reservation in advance is recommended.
