By Blair Adams

Over 50 teams from across Canada, the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean will call Kitchener home for the next week.

The International Softball Congress World Tournament starts on Saturday at Peter Hallman Ballyard and runs until Saturday, August 18.

Several local fastpitch teams will be participating including the Kitchener Hallman Twins, Kitchener Bell Cartage Outlaws, Elmira Expos, and the Nith River Monsters from New Hamburg.

The first games are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday. You can find the schedule here.

This will mark the fifth time Kitchener has hosted the tournament.

A tournament organizer tells KitchenerToday the ISC likes the city for its world class facilities, volunteer base, community engagement, and fan base.

Some new initiatives being introduced this year include a Hall of Fame induction ceremony honouring local softball builder Jim Hallman, and a spotlight of women's softball with Laurier vs Conestoga College Saturday at 9 a.m.

Former NHL goalie Clint Malarchuk will also speaking about mental health at an event on Monday.
