You can now apply for a permit to build a tiny home in Kitchener

Some tiny homes will soon pop up on properties across Kitchener.

Starting Tuesday, residents are able to apply for a permit to build a detached dwelling on their property, provided the property meets certain criteria.

“It's been definitely our most inquired about topic, here at the planning department in Kitchener,” said Richard Kelly-Ruetz with the city.

These homes will be able to be built on about 57,000 properties across Kitchener, but Kelly-Ruetz said between 20,000 and 25,000 properties will meet all the requirements to be eligible for a permit.

“It has to be able to meet building code, it has to be able to be safely accessed by fire, for example, in case of emergency,” he said, “It also has to just fit, generally, into the surrounding neighbourhood and community.”

According to the City of Kitchener website, the lot has to be a minimum width of 13.1 metres and lot area of 395 square metres.
