The new "Laurier EdTalks: Innovation in lecture series" is taking aim at concerns over distanced learning and youth adjusting to physical distancing.

This new series will cover various topics like child and youth education, design thinking, well-being, and community connections, and is the result of Wilfrid Laurier University’s Faculty of Education and Government and Community Relations team and the Waterloo Public Library's new partnership.

Maria Cantalini-Williams, the Dean of the Faculty of Education, noted in a release that this lecture series is a wonderful opportunity for faculty members to share their experiences with the broader community.

"We hope to inform and inspire parents and educators with our evolving ideas based on research and collaborative inquiry.”

The first lecture, "Re-Imagining Education in Haiti, Nepal, Egypt … and Beyond," which will be held on January 27 at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom, will be the first of many lectures that will run until the beginning of June.

The first lecture will feature Associate Professor Steve Sider and Instructor Judy Halpern, coordinators of Laurier's Education and Leadership Institute, which produces learning courses and workshops for educators in Haiti, Nepal and Egypt. This session will discuss the impacts on student learning and how individuals in the region have contributed to the initiative.

Other lectures in the series to keep an eye out for include:

  • The Power of Our Stories - February 24 at 7:00 p.m.
  • Computational Thinking and Digital Fluency - March 31 at 7:00 p.m.
  • Physical Literacy in the 21st Century - April 28 at 7:00 p.m.
  • Building Resilience in Our Children and Youth - May 26 at 7:00 p.m.
  • Inspiring Innovation in Our Children - June 9 at 7:00 p.m.
