Top stories of 2018: Weed becomes legal

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

October 17 was a historic day in this country.

It is the day cannabis became legal.

In the first two weeks of legalization, Statistics Canada said sales at cannabis stores totalled $43 million.

But it hasn't come without a long list of problems.

For one, they have had trouble keeping up with the demand for legal pot.

In Ontario, the ombudsman received more than 1,000 complaints about the province's online cannabis store.

Paul Dube said the most common complaints with the Ontario Cannabis Store involved delivery delays, poor communication with customers and billing problems.

The OCS is the only place Ontario residents can purchase legal pot.

Private retail sales will be allowed as of April 1, but the province announced recently it would initially only allow 25 stores.

Municipalities in Waterloo Region will decide in early January on whether to allow the stores.

Prime Minister Trudeau called the supply shortfall the biggest challenge associated with the change. He noted, however, that he expects the problem to disappear within a year.
