Three local women to represent Canada in field hockey at Commonwealth Games

Three local women are heading to England at the end of the month — hockey sticks in tow.

They've been named to Team Canada and will take part in the field hockey competition at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, which run July 28 to August 8.

The three athletes are Amanda Woodcroft from Waterloo, Jordyn Faiczak from Waterloo, and Brienne Stairs from Kitchener.

Woodcroft and Faiczak are midfields and Stairs plays forward.

“With many of the world’s leading field hockey nations competing at the Commonwealth Games, the challenge for medals will be significant,” said Scott Stevenson, executive director of Team Canada 2022, in a release.

Stevenson is expecting the team to compete hard.

Team Canada will be up against India, Wales, England and Ghana and the top two head to the championship.

At the last Commonwealth Games, Team Canada finished fifth, which was an all-time high.

The team, commonly referred to as the “Canadian Wolf Pack” is now eying a potential semifinals spot in Birmingham.

They will travel directly from Spain, where they're currently playing in the 2022 World Cup, to the UK.

This year's Commonwealth Games feature more medal events for women (135) than for men (133) — the first time in history.
