The regions sexual health education and pregnancy support centre is speaking up after today's Supreme Court ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade, which allows states to ban abortions.
SHORE Centre in Kitchener posted to social media its statement saying they stand in solidarity with those impacted by the decision.
The centre noted though they knew the decision was coming, the Executive Director TK Pritchard said, "it's a really difficult announcement to grapple with for all of us."
"We are feeling so angry and frustrated. There is a lot of grief around this type of legislative announcement. It is difficult for us to comprehend. A lot of us knew it was coming but still are experiencing some shock about where we are. How could we possibly be here," Pritchard said.
The centre encourages residents to "raise your voices in rage." They noted that access south of the border differs from access in Canada. However, the impact is still very significant.
Pritchard said a decision like this increases anti-choice activity, as those who don't support abortion will feel more validated in their beliefs.
"It brings a lot of fear and concerns for people. This is a difficult piece for people in Canada to deal with, as well as people in the U.S., regarding what abortion looks like for us and how we navigate that."
They noted a decision like this forces them to be more vocal in support of abortion access.
"Folks that are mad today, that are grieving: be mad. Grieve. Get out there and talk about your support for abortion and reproductive health care. It's so important we do that."
The centre is hosting a rally on June 29 where people can come together and "raise our voices around the need to protect and ensure there is abortion access in Canada and beyond."
"We want to be present in our online community on the support for abortion, making sure that folks know we are right there along with them. We are mad. The team is grieving."
