The Stanley Cup will be in Waterloo Region in two weeks, when Washington Capitals video coach, and New Hamburg Minor Hockey alumni, Brett Leonhardt brings it home to New Hamburg.

Leonhardt, has been a member of the Capitals coaching staff since 2012, but began his hockey career in Waterloo Region.

The Kitchener native played minor hockey in New Hamburg, before moving on to play AAA and junior hockey in Cambridge and Kitchener.

A free public viewing and open house will be held on Thursday August 2, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m.

The community is invited to see the Stanley Cup and take a photo with it at the New Hamburg Community Centre on 251 Jacob Street, where Leonhardt learned to skate and played for the New Hamburg Huskies.

“Everyone who has ever laced up skates dreams of someday winning the Stanley Cup”, says Leonhardt in a press release. “For me bringing it back to where it all started is a big part of that dream and I am excited to share the Cup with the people of Wilmot and surrounding area.”

The public will also have an opportunity to enter a draw to win a signed Alex Ovechkin Washington Capitals jersey. Proceeds will be going to New Hamburg Minor Hockey.

You are also being asked to bring a donation for the Wilmot Family Resource Centre Food Bank.

The Stanley Cup will visit 55 cities in 62 days over the course of the summer including stops in Russia, Sweden, Denmark, Australia, the Czech Republic, and North America.
