Suspect in Helen Schaller murder found with gunshot wound

By Blair Adams

A man, considered a suspect in the murder of Cambridge's Helen Schaller, has been airlifted to hospital with what police believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Around 11 a.m. on Saturday, Waterloo Regional Police received information that the suspect was in a vehicle at a gas station parking lot, located on Franklin Boulevard in Cambridge.

The Emergency Response Unit was then called in to conduct a high-risk takedown in the area of Franklin and Savage Drive.

According to the Special Investigations Unit, which is now investigating, the man then drove his vehicle into a wooded area.

He was located a short time later with a gunshot wound and transported to Cambridge Memorial Hospital, then later airlifted to a hospital in Hamilton.

Police say the suspect is 39 and from Cambridge.

His name has not been released yet.

Schaller, 58, was shot the afternoon of April 17 on King Street East in the Preston area of Cambridge.

She later died in hospital.

During a roundtable with local media about the recent spike of violent crime in the region on Friday, Waterloo Regional Police Chief Bryan Larkin said the shooting was not targeted.

The SIU, which investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault, has assigned three investigators and two forensic investigators to this incident.

Anyone with information is asked to call the SIU at 1-800-787-8529.

The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
