Students enrolled in the summer semester of math and computer science programs at Wilfrid Laurier University will no longer need to purchase an external webcam for exams.

According to a release from Laurier, the decision was made after questions regarding privacy, cost and availability of webcams were raised by students.

Students who have already purchased a webcam for this semester can email for a refund here.

Interim Provost and Vice-President of Academic, Maureen Mancuso, says 'the university recognizes that the assessment in the online and virtual environment raises new challenges that require innovative solutions.'

As a result, Mancuso says a group of faculty, students and university administrators will be tasked with coming up with solutions for meeting learning goals in an online environment. The solutions this team comes up with will be used by the university during the fall semester.

In the meantime, Laurier says students are still expected to use a computer with a built-in camera or external camera already attached when they go to take their exams.

Below is a statement from Devyn Kelly, President and CEO of the Wilfrid Laurier University Student Union:

"As most of you have now seen, the University has made their final decision regarding the requirement for external webcams for spring/summer exams. We are extremely pleased with their decision to take back the requirement and grateful for the opportunity to work with them in coming to this conclusion.  We extend our thanks to the University for listening to the voices of students on this issue. The Students’ Union will be continuing to work alongside the University and advocate on behalf of undergraduate students as they plan for the fall semester. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me."
