Severe thunderstorm watch lifted for Waterloo Region (update)

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Environment Canada has lifted a severe thunderstorm watch and warning previously issued for Waterloo Region.

The weather agency had warned of conditions favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms, capable of strong wind gusts as well as large, nickel sized hail.

A strong storm ripped through the region on late Saturday morning and into the afternoon – leading to several sizable power outages across the region.

As of Saturday afternoon, Cambridge provider Energy+ Inc reports upwards of 30-thousand customers without power across Cambridge & North Dumfries, while KW Hydro is also reporting roughly 20-thousand customers across their coverage area impacted by active outages. Over 5-thousand customers are reportedly without power in the coverage area of Waterloo North Hydro as well.

Drivers are encouraged to treat any intersections impacted by those power outages as a four-way stop. Additionally, residents that spot downed power lines are cautioned to stay at least 10 metres away, and to call 9-1-1.
