Retired local nurses step in to help hospitals with pandemic

The head of the Registered Nurses Association in Ontario (RNAO) wants the province to do more testing and tracing of COVID-19 cases.

The association is also hoping the public will show its support as well in the days and weeks to come.

CEO of the RNAO, Dr. Doris Grinspun says we can show support by staying at home and by celebrating our nurses every night at 7:30.

“For 5 minutes, from 7:30 to 7:35 — we're all clapping, banging pots and pans. If you're in the car, honk!”

She is calling for more testing and more case tracing — adding that we need to do our part by staying at home.

“Don't allow the younger generation that thinks they are immortal to be crowding together because that is the mess the US is experiencing and we don't want to experience the same mess.”

Grinspun says many nurses are being deployed to health units.

“Ready to give it their all, the same as the ones that are already on the front lines working very hard.”

She says you can show support for our local nurses on social media with #TogetherWeCanDoIt.

Grinspun says over 4,200 nurses from across the province, who are retired or not currently working at the moment, have stepped up to help the current workforce — this includes almost 200 local nurses.
