Regional ‘COVID-19 Care Clinic’ pilot to open in Cambridge

By Luke Schulz

Aiming to establish a “one stop shop” for local COVID-19 care, our region's hospital network is working with the support of Ontario Health West to establish a new regional COVID-19 Care pilot clinic (RCCC).

The initial location is set for 66 Pinebush Road in Cambridge, and the temporary clinic will be managed by Grand River Hospital with the support of local hospital partners, providing COVID-19 testing and medications, vaccination and more.

“This is one strategy that we can implement to improve capacity challenges at local hospitals, and enable hospital teams to focus on providing acute care for our community and increase access to that care,” said Vickie Murray, the integrated director of pharmacy services at Grand River Hospital and St. Mary's General Hospital.

In a release, Murray said the Pinebush Road location will be temporary as staff work to establish a more central access to provide proactive and comprehensive care to all local residents.

“The lessons learned by teams from all regional hospitals who have supported COVID-19 care and prevention provide a strong foundation to support the success of this clinic.” said Murray.

The region noted, however, that this new clinic is not intended to replace care that should be provided by a primary care source like a family doctor or nurse practitioner, as community members are still encouraged to speak with their family physician or seek primary care first for symptoms of respiratory illness.

As the region prepares to open the new pilot clinic, several hospital COVID-19 clinics will be closing at the end of the day on September 30, with the new RCCC to open by appointment only on October 1. Information on hours of operation and appointment booking for the new regional care clinic will be available on local hospital websites beginning on September 30.

“We are passing yet another COVID-19 milestone and I extend our thanks to the hard working teams and our many partners for our collaboration, work and dedication to support our community and provide care when it was needed the most.”
