Region temporarily expanding hours at three warming centres

By Erin Anderson

It's certainly feeling a lot more like winter these days with extreme cold starting to settle in. In response, operating hours are being expanded at some local warming centres.

The Region of Waterloo announced that as of February 4, warming centres at three regional buildings will be open seven days a week, including holidays.

The sites are: 99 Regina Street in Waterloo, 150 Frederick Street in Kitchener, and 150 Main Street in Cambridge.

Previously, the warming centres in K-W were only open Monday to Friday, while the centre in Cambridge was only open between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Through the expansion, all three warming centres will be available on weekends between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The extension is expected to last for the rest of the month and potentially into March too, if required.

The Region of Waterloo added that as part of its Extreme Cold Weather Procedure, additional supports are made available to emergency shelters, as well as outreach and drop-in programs.
