Poppy campaign begins

The Royal Canadian Legion's annual poppy campaign leading up to Remembrance Day is underway.

Canada's Governor General Julie Payette received the symbolic first poppy at a ceremony in Ottawa on Monday morning.

Funds raised during the National Poppy Campaign go back into communities across the country to help support veterans and their families.

“I thank our Governor General for leading the way by accepting this year's First Poppy, and hope millions of Canadians will follow her example,” said Thomas D. Irvine, the Royal Canadian Legion's Dominion President.

“This year has added significance as we mark the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended the First World War,” he added.

Poppies will be available as of Friday.

A ceremony will take place at 316 Marsland Drive in Waterloo that morning at 11 o'clock to launch the K-W Poppy Fund.

Poppies will be presented to local dignitaries and there will be a blessing of the campaign.

A group of riders from CAV Riders Gulf-Kuwait unit will also deliver poppies to retirement homes in the area.
