Police warning of a phone scam asking for your SIN

By Brandon Graziano

Waterloo Regional Police are making you aware of a new phone scam this Thanksgiving weekend.

Fraudsters are using Regional Police's phone number, saying that your SIN has been compromised.

Constable Ashley Dietrich says the fraudsters will then be trying to “help” you out.

“Basically, the fraudsters are offering assistance to get them a new one. In no way are police ever encouraging anybody to give out any information or SIN card information.”

Dietrich says that there have been several reports of this scam so far in the region.

“It's something relatively new, but we're just trying to get the message out to people that our number is being used and to take precaution and to not provide any personal information over the phone.”

Should this happen, you're being directed to contact the Anti-Fraud Centre, which can provide guidelines and resources to put any blocks to their number.

“It will provide any identity fraud in the future as well, but people do need to take those appropriate steps when they are receiving those phone calls of this nature. Often times, these scams are hard to detect, so we're looking to avoid potential victims.”
