Ontario Cannabis Store has provided a brief snapshot of what the industry means to the local economy.

OCS says in the first quarter of 2021, (January to March) retail stores in Kitchener sold over $3.4 million in legal cannabis. That works out to 412,000 grams.

The city also ranks 18 out of 160 cities in total retail sales in Ontario.

As of July 5, there were nine legal cannabis stores operating in Kitchener.

Later in the day, OCS also provided figures for Waterloo.

There are currently six stores in that city. They sold over $2.4 million worth of cannabis in the first quarter of 2021.

Waterloo ranks 26 out of 160 cities in total retail sales.

In the last year, OCS claims to have captured 44 per cent of the market (vs. illegal market). Sales for that period topped $840 million.

Cannabis has been legal in Canada since October 2018.
