New rescue radar demonstrated by independent rescue group

By Dana Roberts

A locally based independent search and rescue group is feeling more prepared than ever thanks to new technology.

Advanced Tactical Training and Communications held a training demonstration for the rescue radar device. The device helps search and rescue teams find anyone who may be trapped beneath the surface. The radar uses ground penetrating radar signals to detect any potential movements.

While the device can go through solid ground, it works best through air pockets where the ground has been penetrated.

The device was loaned by Sensors and Software for training purposes.

“They are making it available to us that we can then assist where needed,” William Bolton, Senior Trainer for Advanced Tactical Training Search and Rescue tells 570 NEWS. “It's one of the tools that we have. We have multiple tools, depending on the environment, depending on the requirements. It's just something else that may be able to accelerate the finding of the person.”

The radar was demonstrated for 570 NEWS at a barn in New Hamburg. The demonstration was successful through both the barn's wooden flooring and nearby concrete.

The rescue radar is not a cheap piece of equipment, retailing at approximately $15,000.

Advanced Tactical Training is an independent group that works with various emergency services. They have been operating for the last five years.

While they are based in Waterloo, they responded to 17 different calls throughout the province in 2018.
