Grand River Transit (GRT) will release near miss ION train footage to stress the importance of being safe around trains during Rail Safety Week, September 20 – 26, 2021.
“It’s footage that will make you tense to watch and cause your belly to rise,” says Regional Councillor Tom Galloway. “But it’s an important reminder that everyone - transit users, pedestrians, cyclists and drivers need to pay attention to their surroundings.”
The five videos highlight how distracted walking, cycling and driving can have tragic consequences using the message, “Things we shouldn’t have to say…”
In all footage shown, ION operators managed to safely stop the train and prevent collisions and serious injury.
Between January 1 – August 31, 2021, GRT had reports of seven near hits with ION trains, and seven collisions with vehicles.
Each video will be posted to GRT’s social media channels, including YouTube with the first video released later today.
