Local manufacturer switches gears to supply foam to healthcare system

Kitchener manufacturer, Custom Foam Systems, is converting their lines to focus on orders coming from the healthcare sector.

Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company has seen their usual automotive and furniture orders drop. Meanwhile, demands from their healthcare clients have risen.

With the looming shortage of medical supplies, manufacturers are working harder than ever to meet the demand.

Bob Germann, President, Custom Foam Systems said they were converting their lines and retraining workers to keep up with orders. They are increasing production of hospital furniture and mattresses, along with smaller foam components to be used in the making of face mask.

German says his workers are “feeling a new sense of mission” and is very proud of their work.

“We're a component supplier and we don't always see exactly where our products are going, so they see a direct line to helping the healthcare providers, and so we're really proud of them for stepping up and meeting that call.”

The renovations are expected to increase their output by 50 per cent. German said have also been seeing more customers reach out to them for foam components.
