Local family calling on province to limit residential care staff to work in one location

Their son is in a residential development facility in Kitchener

“We would be burying our son.”

That is the fear that a local family has for their son who lives in a residential development facility in Kitchener.

In a letter to NDP MPP for Kitchener Centre Laura Mae Lindo, they say they're living in fear of their son contracting COVID-19.

His condition has become much more complicated in the last couple of years, now requiring a machine to help remind him to breathe, several administrations of respiratory medications daily, and chest physiotherapy in order to maintain his health.

“The residential centre has not yet implemented that staff limit their employment to one place during this pandemic,” said the letter in part. “Many staff have two or more places that they work: hospital, community, other long-term care facilities.”

She wants the province to limit staff to working at one place of employment in residential facilities.

“We are terrified of receiving a call telling us that he or one of his housemates has contracted it. As was recently seen at long-term care facilities, this would have fatal consequences.”

The family did not want their identity disclosed, and clarified that they are speaking out for the sake of both residents and staff at residential facilities.

"The residential home our son resides at does its very best to care for him, and we are truly grateful for all their hard work and dedication in continually maintaining his health and well-being," they told 570 NEWS. "We trust them with his care 24 hours a day. However the facility has their hands tied in terms of asking staff to work at one place of employment, as this is an issue that only the provincial government can rectify."
