Layoffs on the way at Grand River Hospital

A mounting deficit at Kitchener's Grand River Hospital means some staff will need to be cut in the months to come.
The hospital's deficit is at $7.4 million.
Ron Gagnon, Grand River's President and CEO, said it means 50 jobs could be impacted.
“That impact could be from complete elimination of the position, to a reduction in hours.” he told 570 NEWS.
Gagnon said they likely won't know until mid-February the number of people who will need to leave the hospital.
“There are a number of strategies we're using … we've held positions, haven't filled them over the past month or so, making sure we want to be able to provide opportunities for people who may be impacted. There may be attrition that we will also be able to take advantage of,” he added.
Gagnon said the overriding principal is making sure they continue to deliver high quality care.
“This hospital has been one of the safest hospitals in the country, for a number of years and we want to continue that.” he explained.
