KW Glee returns to the stage

For the first time in two years, on May 19, the curtains went up with KW Glee performing its first of seven shows

“We were very excited to be back. We had been doing it twice a year for the last ten years until the pandemic. So when all the ducks were in place, and we could perform again, it was magical,” said Steve Lehmann, Producer/Music Director for KW Glee.

Even though the production company had to shut down due to the pandemic, it was able to maintain the connection with the students.

“We didn't know how long we would be down, so we wanted to make sure the kids could stay sharp. We knew they weren't getting the experience performing in the group, so we did some vocal work with them. We did songwriting class to keep the kids working together as a group.”

But, as things started to ease up, the group was able to start dance classes. Lehmann adds because you can wear a mask while dancing, singing in person was one of the last things they rehearsed.

KW Glee became a place for kids to be themselves. Lehmann noted it was devastating for everyone, hoping that they could come back together and then not being able to, so many times during the pandemic. So being able to perform between May 19- 22 was “very special.”

The group treated the audience to an original song called New Day. Amanda Kind, co-director for KW Glee, and their friend JP Sunga wrote the song.

“We wanted it to be an upbeat song that sums up what everyone has been feeling. So the idea of New Day was really appropriate for what we were doing. I could see them dancing with each other having an absolute blast singing New Day, positive things in a happy way.”
