Kitchener to increase tree canopy over next few decades

By Mark Pare

There's an effort to increase the number of trees in the City of Kitchener, more specifically, the amount of shade those trees would provide.

Kitchener council has voted to target 2050 as the year the city would have 30 per cent tree canopy coverage in each of the wards, and up that to 33 per cent by 2070.

But the work will take time, as the city needs to look into planting new trees and maintaining existing ones.

Staff will conduct a review of policies that include tree conservation, protection bylaws and such, with a report due back by the end of the year.

In addition, the motion is calling on staff to come back every five years — beginning in 2025 — on the city's Urban Forest Strategy, where they can explore whether targets need to be modified.
