Kitchener student wins $100,000 scholarship

Meena Waseem won't have to worry about the usual financial pressures most students do as they start their post-secondary education.
Waseem, a student at Kitchener's Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute, has won a $100,000 scholarship from the Loran Scholars Foundation.
The award is based on evidence of character, commitment to service in the community and leadership potential.
National selections took place in Toronto earlier this month.
Waseem said she was in tears upon learning she had won the scholarship and calls it, “Absolutely mind blowing”.
“It is crazy to think that I have earned the opportunities that my parents and I only dreamed of when we moved to Canada just nine years ago. The whole country has opened up in a new way to me! … I never expected to be blessed with something so incredible!” she told KitchenerToday.com via email on Monday.
The $100,000 scholarship, which covers four years of undergraduate studies, includes a $10,000 stipend and summer internship opportunities.
Waseem hopes to study commerce in the fall.
She said her top university choices are Queen’s, Western, McGill and UBC.
