Kitchener senior wins provincial award

By Blair Adams

The provincial government is celebrating 15 seniors for their exceptional contributions to their communities and to the province.

One of this year's Senior Achievement Award recipients is from Kitchener.

Donald “Donny” Hishon, who was named Kitchener's Senior of the Year in June, was recognized for his work with Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous, facilitating meetings at the Grand Valley Institution for Women.

In addition, Hishon also volunteered with reintegration programs to help female offenders prepare for a better future.

The recipients are being recognized by Ontario's Lieutenant Governor during a virtual ceremony on Friday.

“Seniors across the province have felt most directly the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and it is a delight to be able to celebrate the positive difference seniors make to our communities. Today’s recipients are role models to Ontarians of all ages.” said Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell.

Update: Sadly, KitchenerToday.com learned late Friday afternoon that Donald Hishon passed away on Thursday. Visitation will take place at the Henry Walser Funeral Home in Kitchener on Sunday, October 3 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

His memorial service will be held Mon., Oct 4, in the funeral home chapel at 1 p.m.
