Only about six per cent of children under the age of five in Ontario have had their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine since they became eligible about two months ago.
As of Thursday in Waterloo Region, 6.7 per cent of young children between the ages of six months and four-years-old had received their first dose.
Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Kieran Moore, said uptake for that age group has been lower than he expected.
He noted in particular, parents whose children have underlying conditions should consider vaccination and talk to their health-care provider.
The latest vaccination update for Waterloo Region showed a total of 2,470 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have gone into the arms of local residents over the past week: 294 were first doses, 222 were second doses, 413 were third doses, and 1,541 were fourth doses.
