Food bank to make more fresh food available

By Christine Clark

More fresh food is becoming available for families in need in our region.

The Food Bank of Waterloo Region has unveiled the Fresh Approaches Centre at their facility on Alpine Court.

Executive Director, Wendi Campbell says the new centre will allow volunteers to properly wash, repackage and even freeze perishable donations.

“They're going to be able to do all of their cleaning in the space. They're going to be able to compost any of, sort of the damaged product, then repackage the really good product and get those orders right out to the agencies.” Campbell told The Mike Farwell Show on 570 NEWS.

She says the food bank has always taken fresh food donations, but would run into problems getting the food out quick enough.

For example, Campbell says they have a broccoli supplier that they don't take enough broccoli from, because they can't move it quickly enough, adding now they will be able to freeze it.

In the next few weeks, they also hope to add a meat slicer, coffee grinders and a vacuum sealer.
