A new report from The Food Bank of Waterloo Region shows an almost 30 per cent increase in food distribution during the pandemic.

Throughout the first year of COVID-19, over 4.6 million pounds of fresh, frozen and non-perishable food was distributed throughout the region — a 26 per cent increase from last year.

The report, which was published on July 12, provides a detailed look into the supports provided by The Food Bank since the start of the pandemic, up until March 22, 2021.

During that period, nearly 31,000 people received emergency food assistance and hunger relief support; 749,794 meals were served at 41 shelter, residential, community meal and outreach programs, and 34,895 food hampers were distributed to 26 community programs and agency partners located throughout the region.

The report also highlights the importance of community collaboration and how strong partnerships helped organizations navigate the pandemic and provide much-needed supports for people in the community.

“Throughout the last year or so, the community really stepped up,” said Wendi Campbell, CEO, The Food Bank of Waterloo Region. “Whether it was donations of food or funds, homemade masks, personal protective equipment, or hand sanitizer, you truly went above and beyond and we are incredibly grateful for your support and generosity.”
