Barn destroyed by fire near Elmira (3 photos)

The owner was getting the barn warm for a new crop of chicks set to arrive on Friday

Around 60 firefighters from Woolwich and Mapleton Township helped battle a barn fire in the Elmira area on Thursday morning.

The barn, located in the area of 3rd Line and Reid Woods Drive, was fully engulfed by the time crews arrived.

The two-storey structure was used to house chickens, but the barn was empty at the time of the blaze.

The deputy chief of the Floradale station with the Woolwich Fire Department tells 570 NEWS, the owner was getting the barn warm to prepare for a crop of chicks they were planning to move in on Friday.

"The heaters would have been on, everything was warm. A neighbour noticed it and by the time the owner went out to the barn, it was beyond him doing anything." said James Martin.

Martin adds the cause will likely go down as undetermined.

"We know the area it started ... being the barn is a complete loss, all we can go by is what the owner initially saw. We know the area of the barn it started ... there would have been heaters on in the barn to keep everything warm, so possibly, but not positively identified."
