Feds, province funding more high-speed internet service in Woolwich

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

More homes and businesses in Woolwich Township will be able to access high-speed internet thanks to additional funding from both the federal and provincial government.

Both the feds and province have each committed up to $292,000 to build the new infrastructure in the township.

It means more than 90 homes, businesses and farms will be able to access high-speed internet service. The project is expected to be completed in June.

“Reliable high-speed internet is critical to ensuring Canadian families and businesses have the ability to grow and prosper in today’s increasingly connected world,” Kitchener–Conestoga MP Tim Louis, said in a news release. “Through the investments we’re announcing today with our Ontario partners, an additional 90 homes in Waterloo Region will see their broadband connection vastly improved.”

The infrastructure is being put in by Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT) Inc.

Both levels of government, as well as the private sector have invested over $255 million to bring high-speed internet to more than 58,000 households and businesses in southwestern Ontario through SWIFT.
