Cambridge’s Got Talent! Stacey Kay returning home for a live performance next week

By Justine Fraser

Tune in tonight to watch Cambridge’s Stacey Kay take over the stage on Canada’s Got Talent at 8 p.m. (Citytv) where she will sing, rap and dance, competing for a spot in the finale.

Viewers will be able to vote for their favourite act that wasn’t chosen by a judge to help them get into the live finale on Tuesday, May 17.  The winner will receive  $150, 000, and a financial advisor to help them with their dreams.

Stacey Kay’s powerhouse voice and spitfire rap skills got her noticed during her audition for Canada’s Got Talent. Kay received the infamous ‘Golden Buzzer’ from judge Kardinal Offishall on the April 19 episode where she performed the hit “Lady Marmalade” by soul singer Patti LaBelle.

Now she’s gearing up for the last round of the semi-finals tonight, hoping to get her shot at the finale.

Kay competed previously on Season 10 of America’s Got Talent and made it all the way to finals where judge Howie Mandel cut Kay in the final round. Now hosting the Canadian version, he admits he might have made a mistake.

“I’m an idiot,” said Mandel during the show, adding, “but I’m also brilliant because of me being such an idiot, you are here tonight!”

Born and raised in Cambridge, Kay was recognized over the years for her big personality, big dreams and even bigger voice.

She attended Sheridan College’s prestigious music theatre performance program and from there built a career in the music world as a performer and songwriter.

During her pre-audition interview Kay shared some of the ups and downs she has experienced in the music industry including the way they tried to mould her into what they wanted her to look and sound like.

“I remember thinking, okay, they want me to change my hair, my body, my personality, I was like, oh, so everything about me. I didn't feel like myself, and it just was confusing because I didn't know who I was supposed to be. And then I came to Canada's Got Talent, and I have this opportunity to be my full authentic self this time, which is the best feeling ever.”

She first gained a bit of her fame on YouTube where she covered top 40 hits from popular artists, many of whom commented or shared her videos.

Singer Fergie watched Kay perform a cover of her song ‘You Already Know’ and commented “Stacey Kay’s voice is no joke. She’s got soul, she’s got a big voice!”

Stacey Kay will be performing for her hometown at the Hamilton Family Theatre Cambridge on Sunday, May 22 after the finale. Tickets available on Drayton Entertainment's website.
