By Blair Adams

Police will be canvassing a Cambridge neighbourhood Thursday afternoon, looking for information after a woman was gunned down.

It happened around 5:30 p.m. on King Street East, near Church Street North and Westminster Drive North.

The woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries and was later pronounced dead.

A post mortem has been scheduled for Thursday.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 519-570-9777 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

On Thursday afternoon, Mayor Kathryn McGarry and Councillor Mike Mann released the following statement:

“Like many of you, we were horrified to hear the news yesterday about the fatal shooting in Preston.

We are stunned and saddened to think that this could happen in our city, and our thoughts and prayers are with the victim's family. We have spoken with representatives from Waterloo Region Police, who are still in the process of their investigation.

Citizens in Cambridge have a right to feel safe and secure, and we will be meeting with Chief Larkin to ensure we are doing everything we possibly can to protect our neighbourhoods. We will also be meeting with residents in Preston who, I know, share our deep concern.

This violent incident is not reflective of our beautiful and vibrant City and the people who live here.

Together we will work to ensure the safety of our community.”
