Cambridge family hosts blood drive, fundraiser in daughter's memory

The blood drive in memory of Breanna Rego will be held on Saturday

A Cambridge family is coming together to raise awareness, and encourage us to donate blood, on what would have been Breanna Rego’s 11th birthday.

Rego was diagnosed with Acute Myleoid Leukemia in 2016, and after a courageous battle, she earned her ‘angel-wings’ in August of that year.

Tara Gutscher is territory manager with Canadian Blood Services.

"Her family is celebrating what would’ve been her 11th birthday on June 19th by honouring her with a blood drive this weekend - they’re holding a birthday-themed kids fun day to raise money for Go Gold Cambridge, which is an organization that supports families who have children going through cancer treatment."

Gutscher says the Rego family continues to come together to help support the blood donation program in this area.

"Unfortunately, families going through cancer treatments see the need for blood on a daily, weekly, monthly basis. So these families are really strong supporters, as they know folks that are going through the same thing that they have. Breanna’s family is even bringing in 40 people to donate on Saturday in her honour."

Blood donation process takes about an hour of your time, while the actual donation process only takes about five to ten minutes.

"There is a constant need for blood donations now, all the time – it’s never going to go away. If you do want to donate blood - you can visit, and you can make an appointment at your closest clinic."

If you want to help support Breanna’s family and their efforts, you can head over to the Cambridge Blood Donor Clinic at Heritage College on Holiday Inn Drive on Saturday.

The blood drive runs from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., while the fundraising event goes from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
