Cambridge continues to resist against implementing safe injection sites

Councillors will be meeting Tuesday morning to discuss the future of safe injection sites in Waterloo Region.

They will be discussing the results of a survey with the ideas, opinions and concerns of community residents.

Waterloo Region has also scheduled consultation session dates for residents who live near potential safe injection sites.

Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig says it is premature to discuss potential SIS sites in his city.

“We have banned them from going ahead and putting these sites in Cambridge. So, why would you have a consultation with surrounding residents, knowing full well that you couldn't institute one if you wanted to,” Craig says.

Waterloo Region residents have been given the opportunity to voice their suggestions on effective areas for safe injection sites in their city.

The results of the survey will be discussed during a council meeting tomorrow morning.

Craig says there needs to be more discussion regarding the effects of having official SIS sites.

“I think we have to wait for the province of Ontario to make a final decision on whether SIS sites are going to be allowed to go ahead. I think at this point the region, knowing full well that they can't proceed anyways with the SIS sites in Cambridge, needs to hold off.”

Cambridge's Interim Control Bylaw prevents the region from installing any safe injection sites in downtown Cambridge.
