Amazon to open delivery station in Cambridge

By Blair Adams

Online retailer Amazon has announced plans to open a new delivery station in Cambridge.

An existing industrial building will be repurposed at 125 Maple Grove Road.

It's expected the facility will open later this year, and create hundreds of jobs when it does.

“I am delighted by Amazon's decision, and confident that our community will be a great fit for the company,” Cambridge Mayor Kathryn McGarry said in a release.

“Cambridge has a skilled workforce and is centrally located with easy access to highway 401, so it’s not surprising that Amazon has selected Cambridge as the location for its next project.” she added.

The president and CEO of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce tells 570 NEWS, Amazon setting up shop here will help bolster the tech sector.

“I think it's going to be great for those who are going to be looking for a job, or want to get involved in a new venture … it's going to be a great opportunity for people to start off at the ground floor of Amazon right here in the Region of Waterloo,” explained Greg Durocher.

“I think the Toronto-Waterloo Innovation Corridor has created its mark in the world. I think companies like Amazon, who are actively growing and pursuing new opportunities in new areas, are looking for great places to locate … where they can get access to talent, access to transportation networks, and I think where that's where really was the highlight of their decision for coming to the Region of Waterloo.” he added.

The company calls its delivery stations an integral part of its distribution chain.

Packages are transported to delivery stations from Amazon fulfillment and sortation centres, and then loaded into vehicles for delivery to customers.

Hiring has not started yet, but interested candidates are encouraged to sign up for job alerts at www.amazon.com/tc
